Trump Agrees to Renewed ‘Talks’ with Iran, but Says Ceasefire Still ‘Over’

President Donald Trump on Friday announced that Iran had sought to resume peace talks with the United States and that he had agreed to do so, but would not halt combat operations in the interim.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he posted on Truth Social.

This statement from Trump echoes things he said earlier this week.

According to The Guardian, Trump said at the NATO summit that the ceasefire had ended.

“I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum,” Trump said, the outlet reported.

“They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” he added.

Trump renewed strikes on Iran this week, declaring the ceasefire over and asserting that the Iranians had not negotiated in good faith.

Last month, the U.S. and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was meant to extend the ceasefire for 60 days. The war began in February, but was in a state of nominal ceasefire for months, despite intermittent flare ups.

Active hostilities resumed on both sides this week.
